Across the nation schools are struggling with the use of vaping by students to smoke both nicotine-based products and THC products. Many of the cartridges containing THC used by students contain a high concentration level of THC along with other unhealthy substances such as vitamin E oil and fentanyl. This year there have been several deaths of teenagers that can be attributed to the use of vaping products.
Because of the aforementioned concerns, Belen High School is working in conjunction with Judge Cindy Mercer of the 13th Judicial Court to provide intervention opportunities to our students in order to try and curb this epidemic. Beginning immediately, students who are caught with any vaping devices, THC products, or marijuana will be referred to the 13 Judicial Drug Court Intervention Program. This program is an informal intervention program, meaning that in most cases students referred to the program will not have a police record. However, Belen Police will be called so that a police report can be filed. This paperwork is required for referral to the program. Our goal is not to punish the student but to provide them access to the support and counseling resources that are available through the program. Our goal is to provide students with more support and help so they can make better decisions. We want to address the underlying issues that a student may have and provide assistance to the family also.
