In a decisive move to uphold the integrity and sportsmanship of high school sports, NMAA Director Sally Marquez announced on Saturday, September 9th that both the Belen and Valley football teams have been issued their first strikes under the New Mexico Activities Association's (NMAA) newly implemented regulations addressing egregious behavior by both fans and players at high school events.
The incident in question occurred during the Belen Valley football game on the evening of September 8th at Milne Stadium. Director Marquez determined that multiple players from both teams engaged in a melee that exceeded expected behavior, meeting the definition of egregious behavior as outlined in the NMAA regulations.
As a result of these first strikes, both the Belen and Valley football teams will face immediate consequences:
1. Forfeiture of Next Game: Both teams will not be allowed to participate in and will forfeit their next scheduled game.
2. Financial Penalty: In accordance with NMAA regulations, both programs will be required to pay a forfeiture penalty.
This decision emphasizes the NMAA's commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful environment for high school sports. The consequences for future violations by both programs could be severe. If the Belen High School football team receives a second strike under these regulations, their season will be canceled, as required by the NMAA regulation.
The Belen Consolidated Schools remain committed to fostering a positive and sportsmanlike atmosphere within high school sports, and we support the actions taken by Ms. Marquez and the NMAA.
